What is a wrong move?
Definition
A wrong move is a movement that is not adapted to a context, as a result of which the person feels a sharp and persistent pain. The sudden contraction that causes the pain often occurs as a result of a movement in everyday life. In most cases it is not serious because there has been no movement beyond the normal range of motion. So no stretching of the ligament, no dislocation. But this does not exclude the reality of the intense pain felt and the need to consult quickly.
In fact, the term is wrong because in reality there is no bad movement. It is a contextual pain. For each movement, our brain evaluates the effort required and anticipates each movement. An error in evaluation can lead to a wrong movement for example.
Why does it occur?
Possibly, there was a bad anticipation of the movement. A little problem of proprioception in fact…
Example of wrong move
- You are tired and have to pick something up off the floor. You misjudge the distance and pay less attention to how you bend. So you bend your back, don’t bend your knees.
- That’s the tragedy: a bad twist, you lose your balance.
- Your body tries to compensate to balance you, so sudden tension.
- You try to stand up but no, it’s blocked. And ouch, the muscle contraction persists: the pain puts you back on the ground. Oops… compassion
The other nice case is when it happens in the morning when you wake up… have a nice day!
Often there is already an accumulation of tension in the body. For example, you work sitting in a bad position (computer screen not raised, chair is too low at the office. Or you have to carry heavy loads, help people to turn around… or in my case do repeated body manipulations in the office. But also repeated movements in dance. If these movements are “badly done”, it creates tension in the body.
How to get relief from a wrong move?
Heat
This will help to relax the muscle. Avoid moving too much, as this will only make the pain worse. A hot bath can relax you until you can consult a chiropractor. Or use a heating patch, or a hot shower to relieve the muscle contracture.
Self-massage in consciousness
Massage the painful area gently, with balls if you have them. Not too hard, you won’t tolerate it. You can use some essential oil of Wintergreen. Use your breath to blow out each pain, and do only micro movements with awareness.
Food
Turmeric in your diet: natural anti-inflammatory. And drink a lot of water!
Online somatic education session
Is the pain too much? Can’t move to move to consult at the moment? However, you can do an online session of self-massage, self-accupressure and gentle movement. The do-in, makko-ho, or kiko which are 3 methods from shiatsu. Because, the meridians, the organs and the muscles are connected as I explain in a kinesiology session.
Contact me! This is common among dancers… We can’t go to the osteo and physical therapist every day, so we train. The body, the movement, the muscles, it’s our job 🙂
Consult
As a kinesiologist specialised in movement, massage therapist andshiatsu practitioner, I often receive people for this type of reason. After identifying the origin of the contracture and relaxing the muscles, I release the associated memory of all the muscles that have “malfunctioned” together. This way, there will be no worries afterwards. Because after a wrong movement, shock, injury… the body keeps a memory of the movement. It is thus necessary to be sure to “diffuse” this memory in all the muscular chains.
Then, the body must be re-educated. This is why my work is complementary to that of an osteopath: I work a lot on memory, movement and the muscle chain. In general, I help you to recover your posture and postural habits completely. It is also necessary to re-educate the movement. This is called “kinesiology education” in kinesiology, also called Brain Gym.
Prevention
All the somatic education methods I teach are very useful for movement rehabilitation. In my practice, I use a lot the BMC, the feldenkreis, the Eutonie. And also kinesiology brain gym ( kinesthesic education). The advantage of these methods is that you can use only your consciousness to move. Or you can make micro-movements.
I myself have used all these methods to recover from several accidents (whiplash, trauma-cranial…) and some wrong movements! They have also proved to be effective in the post-stroke remission phase. But as I often say, prevent and act on the ground, in this case your posture, and educate your muscle chain to function in an optimised way. The idea is not to make false movements, it’s better not to! If you want to combine business with pleasure, why not try dance therapy? This way you take care of your overall health: body and mind!
